Things you should know before your arrival in Guatemala

Passport and Visa
• Should you lose your tourist card/passport,
this must be reported immediately to the travel agency which made
your reservations and, if necessary, should also be reported to

To rent a car
• If you wish to rent a car, see Car Rental Agencies. You
may contact them for further information by e-mail.

Driving on the Highway
• The Guatemalan Road and Highway System have
improved considerably. The maximum speed on the highway is 80 km/hour (about
50 miles/hour), but it is not respected on any road, so one must drive carefully
and not too fast. You never know when you will find people and animals along
the highway or around the next curve.
• Always drive with your lights on, even during the day.
• Always keep to the right.
• Preferably, only drive during the daytime.

Money
• Upon arriving in Guatemala, it is recommended
that you change your money into quetzals. The exchange rate varies considerably.
At present it stands at Q.7.52 = US$1.00, but it should always be checked
before you exchange your currency.
• You can obtain quetzals at the La Aurora International Airport. Your hotel
can also either change money for you or tell you
where to go.
• When traveling outside Guatemala City, take cash quetzals and small bills
or coins.

Language
• At international hotels and tourist places such
as Antigua and Panajachel, many people speak English, which is not the case
in more outlying places.
• Guatemala consists of 22 ethnic groups which speak their own language,
which is not Spanish.

Food and Water
• Food served at the markets does not tend to
be very clean. Avoid eating raw food.
• Drink only bottled water and avoid using ice cubes in your drinks (especially
at the restaurants and eating places in Tikal)

Health
• In an emergency, it is better to go to a hospital
and not just a health center.
• As Guatemala is a tropical country, it is possible to get malaria or dengue.
Consult list of physicians at your Embassy or Consulate.

Safety Measures
• If it can be avoided, do not stop along the highways or roads.
• Drive during daylight hours to avoid taking a wrong turn.
• Treat the local people with respect and ask for permission before taking their photograph (for which they will usually charge a moderate amount).
• If you have an accident in a rental car, call the insurance company immediately.

• Use only authorized taxis (marked as such).
• In emergencies, call the information and assistance number of the Guatemala Tourist Commission (INGUAT), 1-801-4648281 which works 24 hours a day.
• Watch your photographic equipment. It is advisable to get a broad coverage
insurance policy in your country of origin to cover theft, loss of tour and baggage.
